Keep Your Pets Cool This Summer

Dog and cat in field

This season has proven to be a hot one, and it’s important to remember that our pets can as easily be affected by the heat as their humans can. The Humane Society of the United States has some great tips on how to keep your pets cool. For the full story, go to their website, but here’s their quick list:

  • Never leave your pets in a parked car, not even for a minute
  • Watch the humidity; the higher the humidity, the more difficult it is for your pet to cool itself
  • Limit exercise on hot days; early morning or late evening is best
  • Don’t rely on a fan; fans do not effectively cool off pets
  • Provide ample shade and water; tree shade and tarps are best
  • Add ice cubes to your pet’s water for extra cooling
  • Keep your pet from overheating indoors or out with a cooling body wrap, vest or mat
  • Watch for signs of heatstroke, including heavy panting, rapid heartbeat, and lethargy, and contact your veterinarian immediately

For details on these tips and more, please visit the Humane Society website.

Neighborhood Focus: Berkeley

Tennyson Street business

Located on the Northwest side of Denver, the Berkeley neighborhood contains a diverse mix of businesses and architecture, with a history dating back to the late-1800s, when streetcars were the popular mode of transportation. Today, it retains its old-town vibe with unique shops, eateries, art walks, and more.

Unique Features

Let your pups romp free at the off-leash Berkeley Dog Park, which has fenced options for both large and small dogs. Cat lovers need not despair, as Denver’s first Cat Cafe is a popular destination to spend time with, or even adopt, a furry friend. For old-style amusement park fun, visit Lakeside and ride the wooden roller coaster if you dare. The Cesar Chavez Park offers a playground for kids, conveniently located near popular caffeine outposts Allegro and Downpours for the adults.

Local Businesses

Where to begin? Start at 38th and Tennyson, and head north to find cute boutiques, yummy restaurants, coffee shops, and more. Some of our favorites include: Vital Root, Parisi, Hops & Pie, Mouthfuls Pet Store, BookBar, Tennyson Street Coffee , De Steeg Brewing, Ohana Yoga, Natural Grocers, and the Oriental Theatre.

Getting Around

It’s fairly easy to get around by bike or on foot, and there’s public bus transportation that serves downtown Denver and areas to the west. If you’re driving, Berkeley neighborhood has convenient access to I-70 and the mountains, and it’s about a 10-minute drive to downtown.

Neighborhood Focus: Uptown

neighborhood_uptown1_400x260

Denver’s Uptown neighborhood is popular for its mix of new and established restaurants. Add to this the historic urban feel and easy walkability, for one of our favorite choices for apartment living.

Unique Features

Jog, bike or play tennis at City Park, or check out the state-of-the-art Carla Madison Recreation Center, where you can swim laps and hone your wall-climbing skills. Experience the annual Zoo Lights at the Denver Zoo, or one of the fascinating exhibits or IMAX movies at the Museum of Nature and Science. Uptown also features nationally-recognized medical facilities including St Joseph Hospital and PSL Medical Center.

Local Businesses

Uptown’s 17th Avenue eateries, dubbed “Restaurant Row” are home to Park & Co, Steuben’s, Ace Eat Serve, Watercourse, Hamburger Mary’s, Vine St. Pub, and Beast + Bottle, just to name a few. Other favorite haunts include Fluid Coffee Bar, Marczyk Fine Foods, The 1-Up, Samadhi Yoga, and the Fillmore Auditorium.

Getting Around

Most amenities in Uptown are within walking or biking distance. Street parking is generally good, but be sure to check street signs as some blocks have restrictions. There are handy B-cycle bike-sharing stations as well as a few RTD bus routes that link to downtown Denver and other transportation hubs.
